Perched atop a rough cliff lies Amalfi with its stunning beaches and crystal waters surrounded by wild vegetation. Amalfi has a long history: it was founded by the Romans in the fourth century AD and, after winning independence from the Byzantine Empire in 893, Amalfi was the first of the four Marine Republics and its trade with the Orient was the basis of its wealth.

The most important monument is the "Duomo di Sant'Andrea", dating back to the ninth century with Arabic-Norman reconstructions made in 1203. The bronze doors of the Duomo were cast in Costantinaples in 1066, in a time when the town was most powerful.

The cathedral's front is rich with many golden mosaics, and it was rebuilt in 1861. It has a remarkable bell tower and the “Chiostro del Paradiso” (Cloister of Paradise) has narrow ornamental arcs. Visit the the city’s Museum filled with archeological finds uncovering the city’s history. The centre of the Amalfi lies partly on a slope and is distinguished by white houses that are mostly terraced.
