One of Italy’s leading Grand Hotels, the Excelsior Vittoria is located in Sorrento, the place where it is said that the Roman Emperor Augustus had a beautiful villa with magnificent views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.T he Hotel dates back to 1834, a time when Italy was not yet a unified country. From the day it opened the establishment has been owned and run by the Fiorentino family, one of the few founding hotelier families remaining in Italy today.
The long history of the Excelsior Vittoria is reflected in the unique fin-de-siècle style of the building, which still retains its period of splendour. The interiors are tastefully decorated and contain original antique furniture including beautiful pieces, crafted locally, with inlaid decoration. The Hotel and its terraces, famous for their breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples, have played host to many celebrities and discerning travellers including Kings and Queens, Artists (Richard Wagner, Enrico Caruso, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren) and other notable personalities attracted to Sorrento and the surrounding area. Thanks to this unique location, the hotel offers a variety of different room types. Five acres of private garden with citrus and olive trees also contribute to make the Excelsior Vittoria a unique hotel. There is a large swimming pool in the grounds, with an orange grove nearby, where guests can bathe and relax in the Mediterranean sun. Dining The cuisine at Vittoria is an expert blend of seasonal flavours and fragrances. The many tempting dishes, ranging from local Campania specialities to haute cuisine prepared by the skilled hands of the multiple award-winning chef Vincenzo Galano, can be relished in either the monumental "Vittoria" dining room where you can enjoy a delightful lunch under the vaults of a majestic frescoed ceiling, or in the summer, on the open-air "Bosquet" terrace, overlooking the Gulf where you can glimpse the mauve shades of Vesuvius through the baluster. Its exquisite, distinctive rooms and terraces make the Excelsior Vittoria a superior choice for successful banquets and gala dinners. Vegetarian menus can also be provided on request.
Information on the area Romantic Sorrento, the elan vitale of the peninsula it takes its name from, stands on the grey tufa rock on the southern side of the Gulf of Naples, enjoying a splendid, panoramic location. With a blanket of green olive orchards and terraces of olive and lemon trees, jagged, unreachable cliffs dominated by watchtowers, caves and enchanted bays, set against the deep blue of the crystal clear sea, Sorrento is the ultimate creation of nature's magic. It's a place that invites trekking (the trail from Punta Campanella to Monte San Costanzo and Baia di Ieranto is world-famous) and watersports whilst savouring the delights of the cuisine enriched by the excellent local ingredients. But Sorrento is also a place of history and culture, commencing from the Greek-Roman town plan that has been preserved to modern times, consisting of parallel roads spreading out from the main axis of Via San Cesareo and fulcrum Via Tasso. There are numerous archeological relics exhibited in local museums or along the roads of the town centre, as well as beautiful churches and aristocratic palazzi: notable among these are the 14th century Cloister of St. Francis featuring Arab travertine interlacing arcades and used as a venue for the Sorrento Festival concerts, and the Sedil Dominova, ancient nobliary seat dating to the 16th century. Visitors to Sorrento can enjoy the many restaurants and bars in their free time, as well as and most importantly, shops, craft workshops and exclusive boutiques for all tastes and needs: from lace to coral ornaments, inlaid boxes, hand-painted ceramics and mouthwatering sugared almonds and citrus liqueurs. And not forgetting the leading labels of Italian haute couture present with their own private label stores or in specialist shops.
By Car Take the A3 Napoli-Pompei-Salerno motorway and exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then follow the signs to Sorrento. Once in Sorrento go to Piazza Tasso in the town centre where you will find the main gate. Journey times vary according to traffic and season. With a car, resorts like Amalfi, Ravello and Positano are all within easy reach, just a few km along the Amalfitana coast road.
By train Arrive at Naples Central Station. Change to the local train, the “Circumvesuviana”, which leaves for Sorrento every 20-30 minutes. The journey to Sorrento (last stop) takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. One of the stops on the line from Naples to Sorrento is Pompei Scavi, the nearest station to the archaeological site of Pompeii. If requested, a car will pick you up at Naples Central and take you to Sorrento.
By Plane Land at Capodichino International Airport in Naples, which is connected to the major international and Italian airports. If requested, a car will pick you up at the airport and take you to Sorrento in approximately one hour. There is also a public bus service from the airport to Sorrento.
