It’s known for the ‘Sassi’, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.  The Sassi are houses dug into the rock which is characteristic of Basilicata region. Many of these "houses" are really caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are located on the rooftops of other houses. This area was also the setting to Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ”. Visit the National Museum of Matera and see that this place is among the most ancient sites for its continuous human presence. Venture out and visit the more than 100 churches in the area, starting from the cathedral (1268–1270) an important monument dedicated to Santa Maria della Bruna since 1389. Built in an Apulian-Romanesque architectural style, the church has a 52 meter tall bell tower. Dine with a luscious plate of fava beans and chards, or a homemade cheesecake.
